Landmark Society Gives Village $125K for St. Paul's

Garden City has received a $125,000 donation from the new St. Paul’s Landmark Society to jump-start preservation of the village’s largest historic building. St. Paul's, originally built in the late 19th century, has been a central landmark in Garden City, but years of deferred maintenance have left it in need of significant repairs. The donation will fund a phased, philanthropy-supported plan to repair the structure, starting with urgent roof work this year. Village leaders emphasize that this approach aims to protect the historic landmark without imposing heavy new tax burdens on residents. The future of St. Paul's has been a topic of lively community debate, with some advocating for full restoration and others exploring alternative uses. The Landmark Society's gift is seen as a critical first step toward preserving the building's architectural heritage while keeping the financial impact manageable for the village.

St. Paul's is a cornerstone of Garden City's identity, housing community events and local history. The phased plan includes not only roof repairs but also assessments of structural integrity, masonry, and windows. Future phases may involve fundraising for interior renovations and adaptive reuse. The Landmark Society, formed recently by preservation-minded residents, hopes to build on this momentum with additional grants and private donations. This approach mirrors successful preservation projects in other historic districts, where public-private partnerships have saved landmarks without overwhelming municipal budgets.

Joe Carey Named Diamond Award Winner

Garden City baseball fans can celebrate as High School senior Joe Carey has been named Nassau County’s top pitcher, winning the 2026 Diamond Award after a dominant season. Carey's pitching and clutch hitting led Garden City to the New York State Tournament and ended a 21-year drought since the school’s last Diamond Award winner. The Diamond Award is presented annually by the Nassau County Baseball Coaches Association to the county's most outstanding pitcher. Carey posted a 0.92 ERA over 76 innings, striking out 112 batters while walking only 18. At the plate, he batted .405 with 8 home runs and 32 RBIs. His performances in key playoff games included a complete-game shutout in the county semifinals and a game-winning home run in the state quarterfinals. The award not only highlights Carey's individual excellence but also underscores the resurgence of Garden City's baseball program, which reached its first state tournament in over a decade. Carey is committed to continuing his baseball career at the University of Virginia, where he plans to study business.
