Apple is preparing to update the Mac Studio for the first time since early 2025, and the changes are more significant than a simple spec bump. The current high-end Mac Studio is still based on the M3 Ultra because Apple never shipped an M4 Ultra chip. That leaves the desktop lineup in an unusual position: the fastest Mac Studio is now more than a year old, and rivals in the Windows workstation space continue to push core counts and AI performance. Later this year, that changes with the introduction of M5 Max and M5 Ultra variants. The refresh was originally planned for mid-2026, but the industry-wide memory shortage has pushed the launch window to October, according to recent reporting.

This fall: M5 Max and M5 Ultra

The next generation Mac Studio is expected to debut with Apple's M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. Most of the attention will center on the M5 Ultra, which is rumored to offer up to 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. That is a substantial step up from the M3 Ultra, and it should deliver a considerable performance gain for tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, and software compilation. The M5 Ultra will also bring a generational leap in memory bandwidth and efficiency, thanks to a more advanced process node and improved architecture.

Perhaps the most exciting specification is memory. The M5 Ultra is said to support up to 768GB of unified memory. That would be the most ever in a Mac desktop, eclipsing the already generous capacities of the current high-end models. It is unclear, however, whether Apple will be able to ship that much memory at launch because of supply constraints. The global memory shortage, which has affected everything from smartphones to AI accelerators, has forced manufacturers to prioritize high-margin products. Apple may choose to offer 768GB only as a build-to-order option, or it may limit the maximum capacity at release.

The Mac Studio's pricing has already been affected by these market forces. When the M4 Max and M3 Ultra variants first arrived, they started at $1,999 and $3,999 respectively. After price hikes, they now command $2,499 and $5,299. With the M5 generation, those price points could climb even higher. Some analysts have speculated that the cost of memory is the main driver, since Apple's unified memory is integrated onto the chip package and cannot be upgraded later. For professional users who need large memory configurations, the total cost of ownership is rising.

Why the M5 Ultra matters

The M5 Ultra is more than just a faster chip. It will likely be the first Mac Studio component to fully embrace the AI era. With the rumored 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores, it will be able to run large language models locally, making it an attractive option for developers and researchers who want to avoid cloud-based AI services. Apple has also been investing heavily in its Neural Engine, and the M5 family is expected to bring notable improvements in machine learning performance. This could make the Mac Studio an even more compelling alternative to NVIDIA-powered workstations for certain AI workloads.

But the M5 Ultra's memory capacity is arguably the bigger story. Large language models are extremely memory-hungry. A model like Meta's Llama 3 with 70 billion parameters requires around 40GB of memory just for the weights, and far more for context and inference. With 768GB, a single Mac Studio could potentially run multiple large models simultaneously, or fine-tune them using techniques like LoRA. That sort of capability is currently reserved for servers with arrays of expensive GPUs.

2028: M7 Max and M7 Ultra

Looking further ahead, Apple is reportedly planning another Mac Studio refresh in 2028 with M7 Max and M7 Ultra chips. These should be substantially more significant than the M5 update. The M7 family is rumored to make massive leaps in AI performance, potentially turning the M7 Ultra into a beast for on-device large language models. It is also possible that Apple will introduce design tweaks to the Mac Studio, though it is unclear what those would be. The current enclosure has remained largely unchanged since the product's debut in 2022, and a redesign could offer additional cooling capacity or a new set of ports.

Two specific upgrades have been highlighted for the M7 Ultra Mac Studio. The first is a new heatsink design, which would improve sustained performance by allowing the chip to run at higher clocks for longer periods. The second is support for up to 1.5TB of unified memory. That is subject to supply availability, but a recent Bloomberg report says Apple is actively developing the M7 Ultra to support that capacity. If it happens, the Mac Studio would finally match the maximum memory configuration of the 2019 Mac Pro, which is the most RAM any Mac has supported.

The 2019 Mac Pro was a massive tower with enormous internal expansion, and it could be configured with 1.5TB of DDR4 ECC memory. To achieve that, users had to fill all 12 DIMM slots. The Mac Studio, by contrast, is a small square box. Putting 1.5TB of unified memory into a compact enclosure would be a technical marvel, but it would not come cheap. Given Apple's current memory upgrade pricing, moving from 128GB to 1.5TB could cost around $35,000, before accounting for the necessary CPU upgrade. That figure underscores just how expensive high-capacity unified memory remains.

The memory shortage and its impact

The memory shortage is not just a Mac Studio problem. It has affected Apple's entire product lineup, from the iPhone to the MacBook Pro. The shortage is driven by a number of factors: the rise of AI accelerators consuming vast quantities of HBM and DDR5, a slowdown in new fabrication capacity, and a general increase in demand for smart devices. Apple is not immune to these forces. The company has historically negotiated long-term supply agreements and pre-paid for capacity, but even that has not been enough to prevent price increases.

Apple's first price hike for the Mac Studio was unusual. The company generally keeps prices stable across generations, but the M4 Max and M3 Ultra versions introduced higher entry prices. If the M5 line continues this trend, we may see the base Mac Studio approach $2,799 or higher. That would put it in a difficult position against Apple's own MacBook Pro, which starts at a lower price but offers far less expandability.

What about the Mac Pro?

The Mac Studio has effectively replaced the Mac Pro as Apple's go-to desktop for most professional users. The Mac Pro still exists, but its current incarnation is based on M2 Ultra and has not been updated in a while. There is speculation that Apple will eventually release a new Mac Pro with even higher specifications, perhaps using a future M-series chip with a proprietary socket. For now, the Mac Studio occupies the top of the desktop lineup, and its memory and performance upgrades will only widen the gap between it and the MacBook Pro.

Fun fact: the 2019 Mac Pro supported up to 1.5TB of RAM, which was the most in any Mac. If the M7 Ultra Mac Studio delivers the same, it will mark a return to that level of capability in a much smaller chassis. It will also be a testament to how far Apple silicon has come since the Intel days.

Pricing and positioning in the lineup

Apple's current Mac Studio lineup starts at $2,499 for the M4 Max version and $5,299 for the M3 Ultra version. The pricing is high, but it is still within the realm of what professionals expect for a workstation-grade machine. With the M5 refresh, those prices could rise again.
