Live updates: Bitcoin slips back to $77,000 after challenging $80,000 overnight

Bitcoin slipped back to around $77,000 on Friday after briefly challenging the $80,000 level overnight, as a powerful rally that began earlier in the week showed signs of consolidation. The largest cryptocurrency by market value touched an intraday high near $79,500 during the Friday session before retreating, yet still traded roughly 6% higher over the past 24 hours. The move extends a run that carried Bitcoin from below $64,000 earlier in the week, adding more than $15,000 in value within days.

Market participants watched the sharp advance with a mix of optimism and caution. While Bitcoin's breakout above key technical levels drew inflows into exchange-traded funds, some analysts warned that the pace of the rally could lead to a pullback. The question now is whether this marks the start of a sustained bull market or a short-lived squeeze driven by leveraged traders.

Altcoins Mount a Catch-Up Rally

As Bitcoin paused just below the psychological $80,000 mark, traders shifted attention to alternative cryptocurrencies that had lagged during the initial surge. FalconX head of derivatives Joshua Lim said Bitcoin's rise could slow from here, with traders rotating into altcoins that have missed much of the rally. Lim described this as a "catch-up" trade, where capital flows into assets with stronger upside potential after Bitcoin's outsized move.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) led the market with a 31% gain over 24 hours, while Ethena (ENA) rose 27%. Pudgy Penguin's native token, PENGU, and Pepe Coin (PEPE) gained roughly 20% each. Lim said traders are buying BCH for broader exposure to a rising crypto market, and strong price gains can make weaker altcoin investment cases easier for portfolio managers and investment committees to defend.

However, broader measures have yet to confirm a full altcoin season. Bitcoin dominance stands at 59.8%, down just 0.1 percentage point, while CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index is at 33 out of 100, down from 51 last week. This suggests that, despite notable altcoin gains, Bitcoin still commands the majority of market attention and capital.

Ray Dalio Recommends Gold and Bitcoin Over Bonds

Adding to the bullish sentiment was billionaire investor Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, who advised investors to diversify into gold and Bitcoin while underweighting debt assets. In a social media post on Friday, Dalio cited three recent events that align with the themes in his book How Countries Go Broke: The Big Cycle: Japan's sale of U.S. government paper to support the yen, U.S. bond yields hitting new highs alongside dollar weakness, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's attempts to lower or cap bond yields.

"I suggest diversifying well in asset classes and countries that have strong income statements and balance sheets and are not having great internal political and external geopolitical conflicts," Dalio wrote. "Underweighting debt assets like bonds, and overweighting gold and a bit of bitcoin. Having a small percentage—maybe 10-15%—of one's money in gold can reduce a portfolio's risk, and I think it would also raise its return."

Dalio's comments come as gold reached $4,600 an ounce, rising a further 2% over the past 24 hours, while silver approached $70 an ounce after gaining more than 2.5%. The simultaneous strength in Bitcoin and precious metals suggests that some investors are seeking hedges against currency debasement and fiscal uncertainty.

Fed Rate Hike Bets Rise

In the bond market, traders increasingly priced in the possibility of Federal Reserve interest rate hikes later this year. The 30-year Treasury yield rose four basis points to 5.28%, while the 10-year yield gained 3.5 basis points to 4.73%. Notably, the two-year yield jumped 5.3 basis points to 4.24%, a move that reflects rising expectations for Fed policy tightening.

CME FedWatch now places the odds of a rate increase in September at more than 40%, up from just 33% one week ago. The odds of one or more Fed rate hikes at some point in 2026 have risen to 72%. This shift in expectations follows Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's efforts this week to jawbone interest rates lower, which traders have tested by pushing government bond yields higher despite his comments.

The Fed's policy trajectory remains a key driver for risk assets, including cryptocurrencies. Some analysts argue that easier financial conditions, such as Treasury support for long-term bonds, tend to benefit digital assets. Standard Chartered's Geoff Kendrick noted that volatility has two sides in digital assets and that short liquidations have driven much of Bitcoin's recent surge. He expects the next leg to be driven by buyers, with ETF inflows picking up and potentially reaching $1 billion per day at some point.

Crypto-Related Stocks Surge

Equity markets responded positively to Bitcoin's rally, with crypto-related stocks outperforming the broader market. Robinhood, which had seen crypto trading volumes fall off sharply in the bear market, rose 12.5%. Coinbase advanced 9.2%, while Gemini gained 10%. Circle was higher by 9.2%, Bullish rose 6%, and Galaxy Digital gained 4.6%. Strategy, the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder, jumped 6% after moving back into the green on its crypto holdings.

The Nasdaq and S&P 500 were both near session highs, each up 0.55%, showing that equity investors remained unconcerned about rising rate bets. Data center operators, many of which had exited Bitcoin mining, continued to sell off. Hut 8 dropped another 8% on Friday, bringing its decline to more than 40% since hitting a record high in early June. Cipher Mining fell 8.8%, TeraWulf 5%, CleanSpark 5%, and IREN 3.1%.

ETF Inflows Signal Institutional Demand

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs drew $606 million in net inflows on August 20, up from $517 million the day before, while ether ETFs pulled in $221 million, according to SoSoValue data. Every listed asset attracted inflows, with XRP funds adding $13 million and Solana funds $15 million. The second consecutive day of accelerating institutional buying helped validate Bitcoin's breakout, distinguishing it from a purely short-squeeze-driven move.

The flows answered a key question hanging over the rally. Bitcoin cleared $69,000 on Wednesday and pushed above $72,000 on Thursday, and skepticism remained about whether the move was driven by real demand. Two days of inflows this size, each larger than the previous day, suggest institutions are chasing the break rather than merely covering short positions.

However, analysts caution that the pace could be unsustainable. Bitcoin has run from below $64,000 to above $72,000 in three days, and rallies that steep tend to give back ground once momentum cools. The persistence of ETF buying into next week will determine whether this breakout has a solid foundation or fades into another spike.

Institutional and Market Developments

In other notable developments, Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company (BSTR), led by Blockstream co-founder and CEO Adam Back, and Cantor Equity Partners I (CEPO) mutually terminated their proposed business combination. According to an August 20 SEC filing, BSTR will pay CEPO $15 million in cash, and the associated private placements have been canceled. CEPO will search for another acquisition target, while Back and BSTR will continue pursuing bitcoin treasury and yield strategies.

"Despite current market conditions, we continue to see substantial demand for return on bitcoin, and we have spent the last year building the capability to deliver it," said Back.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is preparing for a record-breaking initial public offering that could match or exceed SpaceX's $75 billion debut, according to Bloomberg. The Claude developer could file publicly as soon as the end of this month. SpaceX's IPO raised $75 billion in June, which rose to $86.2 billion after the overallotment option was exercised. Anthropic's mega-IPO is coming in the same week Bitcoin broke out on record ETF inflows, suggesting that AI and crypto are competing for capital simultaneously rather than at each other's expense.

Citadel has also capitalized on the recent volatility in AI-related stocks. The firm successfully shed more than 80% of the aggregate risk from a portfolio acquired from Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund, completing nearly 100 block trades totaling over $4 billion. The resulting V-shaped recovery led to major profits, with Citadel's Wellington Fund closing July higher by 5.94%.

As Bitcoin trades around $77,000, the market's attention turns to whether the rally can maintain its momentum. The convergence of ETF inflows, favorable macro commentary from prominent investors, and renewed interest in altcoins suggests a broad-based shift in sentiment. Yet the speed of the move also raises the risk of a sharp reversal, and traders will be watching the coming sessions for signs of sustainability.
