I finally found a magnetic phone grip I never want to remove

I told myself I wouldn't buy an OhSnap accessory for my phone. Every one I'd tested felt overpriced and slightly flawed in one way or another. But after living with the OhSnap Snap Grip Stand for months, I eventually broke down and bought my own. It's the rare phone grip that earned a permanent place on my device — and one I have zero desire to remove.

The Snap Grip Stand is the latest evolution of OhSnap's magnetic grip ecosystem. It's a thin disc that mounts to the back of your phone or case, containing a ring of magnets that align with Apple's MagSafe pattern. The whole unit is only 3.7mm thick, which means it slips into pockets without creating that annoying bulky lump. You barely notice it's there until you need it.

Why I never took it off

I've tested a lot of magnetic phone grips over the years. PopSockets require a separate adhesive base and are often too tall. Generic ring grips are cheap but flimsy. And earlier OhSnap products were nice, but they always had some trade-off. The first generation felt too fragile. Later versions introduced a soft-touch coating that eventually started peeling. The Snap Grip 5 improved the magnet strength but still didn't offer an integrated stand that could hold the phone upright in portrait orientation.

That's what makes the Snap Grip Stand different. It adds a thin fold-out ring that wraps around the main magnetic disc. When you need a stand, you simply pull the ring down. The phone props up on a surface in its natural vertical orientation, ready for video calls, watching media, or following a recipe. It's one fluid motion — no rotating, no locking tabs, no wrestling with a flimsy flap. Just pull and set it down.

Most rival magnetic grips with stands are lucky if they can prop the phone at a comfortable angle. Many collapse under the weight of a modern flagship or only work in landscape mode. The Snap Grip Stand is different. Its hinged arm is sturdy enough to keep the phone upright at a useful viewing angle, and because the stand ring is positioned on the outer edge of the grip, the phone's center of gravity stays balanced.

More than just a stand: grip and rotation

The grip itself is one of the most versatile I've tried. The interlocking joints can be used in two ways. You can slide two fingers loosely between the joints, similar to how you'd use a PopSocket, or you can place one finger through the joints for a much more secure hold. I've used both depending on the situation. Walking around with a loose two-finger grip is comfortable for short bursts, while a single finger through the ring gives you a locked-in feel when you're taking photos or recording video.

The entire disc rotates freely, so you can spin the phone to any angle. That's handy for adjusting the phone's position while navigating, reading, or using a camera. There's a slight scraping sound as it rotates, but that never bothered me. The rotation feels smooth and controlled, and after months of use, it hasn't loosened or developed any wobbly play.

The magnet ring is double-sided, just like on the previous generation. That means the grip doesn't only attach to a magnetic phone or case. It can also stick flat to metal surfaces like a fridge, a gym machine, a locker, or your car's interior. When you're doing a workout and want your phone at eye level on a squat rack, you can simply stick it there. Or, when you're working in the garage, you can slap your phone onto a metal cabinet and have it out of the way. I've used this feature more often than I expected.

Wireless charging also works through the grip, though it's worth noting that you'll get the best results with a proper MagSafe-compatible charger. The grip doesn't add too much extra thickness, so the charging pad can still make a solid connection. Some fast charging speeds may be capped, but standard wireless charging is perfectly fine for daily top-ups.

Materials and build quality

One of the reasons I avoided earlier OhSnap grips was longevity. I remember testing the Snap Grip 5 and finding that its soft-touch coating started peeling over time. The Snap Grip 4 had an adhesive layer that I wasn't a fan of. The Snap Grip Stand, however, is made from bare anodized aluminum. There's no paint or coating to chip, no soft-touch plastic to peel, and no sticky residue to worry about. It looks and feels like a precision piece of metal, which it is.

The aluminum construction gives it a premium weight balance. It's light enough not to make the phone feel heavy, yet substantial enough to feel durable. The anodized finish has a subtle matte texture that makes the grip easy to hold. You don't get fingerprints all over it within minutes, which is more than I can say for many glossy phone accessories.

OhSnap also added a small vertical magnet inside the stand arm to keep the stand from rotating when you don't want it to. That extra magnet matches Apple's MagSafe pattern and, together with some grippy transparent plastic, creates enough friction to hold the stand in its closed position. It's a thoughtful detail that solves a common problem with fold-out stands. On many budget grips, the stand arm moves freely and ends up tapping or rattling when you're walking around. The Snap Grip Stand stays put until you deliberately pull it open.
