Karla Sofía Gascón is back in front of the cameras. The Oscar-nominated Spanish actress has begun production in Rome on “School of Seduction,” an Italian comedy directed by and starring Carlo Verdone. Paramount+ will release the film next year, a move that gives the project a wide international window and continues Verdone’s already close relationship with the streaming platform.

The film brings together distinctly different generations of stardom. Verdone is a Rome-born comic institution, while Gascón became one of the most discussed names in international cinema after her leading role in Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez.” Her character in “School of Seduction” is being kept under wraps, although Gascón says she is playing a part that feels genuinely new to her.

A love coach for the digital age

According to the official synopsis, “School of Seduction” is set in a moment when courtship has become strangely complicated. Falling in love, cheating, making up and breaking up can all happen through artificial intelligence, and the barriers between real intimacy and digital performance have never been harder to read. Six characters, each carrying their own insecurities and emotional fragility, decide to consult a love coach who promises to help them interpret the signs, decode mixed messages and guide their romantic decisions.

The synopsis adds that “some are searching for love, some are trying to save it and others can’t stop questioning the past.” That setup gives Verdone and his co-stars a flexible comic structure that can move between farce, romantic confusion and moments of emotional sincerity. It is an especially suitable premise for Verdone, whose comedies have often found humor in ordinary people’s most awkward and vulnerable impulses.

Vittoria Puccini, best known to Italian audiences for “Madly,” and Lino Guanciale, recognized internationally for “The Count of Monte Cristo,” complete the central cast. Gascón’s role is still officially undisclosed, but her presence suggests Paramount+ is positioning the film as an international event rather than a purely local comedy.

A Roman homecoming for a beloved comic voice

Carlo Verdone has spent decades as one of Italy’s most reliable commercial filmmakers. His films are systematic hits at the Italian box office, and he has a reputation for building movies around characters that feel both recognizable and exaggerated. From his early directorial work in the 1980s to his more recent seriocomic character studies, Verdone has helped define the sound and rhythm of modern Italian screen comedy. His humor often grows out of everyday anxieties, family pressure, romantic compromise and the fear of making a fool of oneself in public.

“School of Seduction” is produced by Aurelio and Luigi De Laurentiis, the producers behind many of Verdone’s recent projects. The De Laurentiis family has an overall deal with Verdone, and their company has been central to keeping his brand of popular comedy healthy in a changing media landscape.

Verdone has also found new life on Paramount+ with “Vita da Carlo,” a series in which he plays a fictionalized version of himself. The show allowed him to explore his own public image, his family history and his place in Italian pop culture. Returning to a feature after that television run has reshaped how he sees the job.

“Returning to shooting a movie after dedicating five years to a TV series is like debuting all over again,” Verdone said in a statement. “You are filled with the anticipation and excitement of a new start: wondering if your vision will translate, if your actors will find guidance in your direction, if your focus will set the tone for the crew.”

Moving past an awards-season storm

The project will inevitably be watched closely because of Gascón’s recent history. Her campaign for “Emilia Pérez” imploded in January after old social media posts resurfaced. In the posts, written on X, Gascón expressed offensive views about Muslims, George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars. The timing was especially painful because “Emilia Pérez” had entered the awards race as one of the strongest best-picture contenders, landing 13 Oscar nominations and eventually winning two.

Gascón was nominated for best actress. She apologized for the tweets and chose not to walk the red carpet at the ceremony, though she did attend. Her nomination placed her in one of the race’s most crowded categories, alongside Demi Moore and winner Mikey Madison.

In the aftermath, the question became whether her international career could survive the controversy. Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, said the company would be open to working with her again, and no major project was publicly pulled. “School of Seduction” is therefore a meaningful vote of confidence from a major studio-backed streamer.

Gascón has sought to move forward in public, too. At the recent Venice Film Festival, she received a Kinéo Award, a recognition presented by Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage along with the Kinéo Cultural Association. The honor allowed her to appear on the international circuit again in a positive context.

What comes next

“School of Seduction” is not the only project Gascón has lined up in the aftermath. The most advanced is an English-language Western called “Trinidad,” set in the 19th century and directed by Spanish filmmakers Laura Alvea and José Ortuño. The film also stars Gabriela Andrada and features Paz Vega. In “Trinidad,” Gascón reportedly plays a villain known as Widow Bronson, a departure from the singing, dancing world of “Emilia Pérez.”

She also has other projects in earlier stages, though details remain limited. For now, Rome is her base, and “School of Seduction” is the immediate proof that European television and film can still find room for actors with complicated public narratives if their work remains compelling.

With a blend of Italian comic tradition and an internationally known cast, “School of Seduction” is shaping up as one of the more intriguing Paramount+ originals of next year. Whether it can extend Verdone’s winning streak beyond Italy will depend on how well the humor of modern romantic confusion translates across borders. The streaming release could give the veteran comedy filmmaker his biggest audience yet.
