How Natalia Grace Took Control of Her Own Narrative: 'Becoming a New Person'

Natalia Grace, the 21-year-old at the center of one of the most bizarre and heartbreaking custody sagas in recent memory, is finally speaking her own truth. In the final episode of The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: The Final Chapter, she takes a bold step: a cover shoot with a major magazine that she describes as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

"I'm really just trying to take control of my life and stop letting other people control it," she says, her voice brimming with excitement. "I feel like I'm becoming this new person. This new version feels amazing—feels free."

The freedom she speaks of is hard-won. For more than a decade, her story has been shaped by others: first by her biological parents in Ukraine, then by her first adoptive parents, the Barnetts, and later by her second adoptive family, the Manses. Now, with the help of the DePaul family—a couple with dwarfism who originally tried to adopt her in 2009—she has escaped what the series alleges was ongoing abuse at the hands of the Manses.

The details of that escape are dramatic. Three days before Christmas in 2023, Nicole DePaul and her daughter Mackenzie drove from upstate New York to a church in Nashville, Tennessee, where the Manses had relocated. They picked up Natalia in the middle of the night, and she has been living with them ever since. The move came after Natalia's boyfriend Neil helped her see that she needed to leave.

What was not shown in the series was the emotional toll the cover shoot took on Natalia. Midway through the day, anxiety turned to panic. Her eyes filled with tears, fogging her black-rimmed glasses, and she locked herself in a bathroom, shouting for everyone to get out. After a few tense minutes, she emerged, breathing steady, composure regained. It was a raw moment that underscored the trauma she carries.

In her first interview since the docuseries debuted in 2023, Natalia sat down to share her side of the story—one of survival after years of trauma, misdiagnosis, and media distortion. She was at times cryptic, nervous, and avoidant, but also cheerful and bubbly when speaking about hopes for the future. "Now I want to take control of my life, grab a hold of my life and steer it where I want to go," she said.

She acknowledges the labels that have haunted her: "murder massacre," "sociopath," "liar." The legal system, too, has struggled to define her. As legal expert Beth Karas wonders in the final episode, "Was Natalia a child or an adult? Was she a sociopathic villain, or was she a misunderstood, abused victim?"

Natalia was born with a rare form of dwarfism that caused her to appear much younger than her actual age. When she was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett in 2010, they believed she was a child, but later claimed she was actually an adult pretending to be a minor. The Barnetts eventually had her age legally reclassified in 2012, and they left her alone in an apartment in Indiana when they moved to Canada. That case drew international headlines and sparked a criminal investigation, though charges against the Barnetts were eventually dropped.

After the Barnetts, Natalia was taken in by Bishop Antwon and Cynthia Mans, who adopted her in 2023. But within six months, the Manses began questioning her behavior, leading to the conflict that forms the basis of The Final Chapter. The show alleges that the Manses subjected Natalia to emotional and physical abuse, including forcing her to stay in a hotel alone after an argument. Multiple attempts to reach the Manses for comment went unanswered.

Natalia's escape to the DePauls has been transformative. Vincent and Nicole DePaul, who also have dwarfism, understand her struggles intimately. They have welcomed her into their home in upstate New York, where she now lives with them and their children. "It is definitely a blessing to be alive," she said in an earlier exclusive interview.

On the day of the cover shoot, Natalia was visibly nervous but determined. As the photographer guided her through poses, she tried to relax. "I'm just a normal girl with dreams, like being on the cover of PEOPLE," she said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I just feel like people being able to see the story and encourage them to know that they can do whatever they want when they put their minds to it."

Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledged that the years of legal battles and media scrutiny have taken a toll. "Just seeing what I went through and even someone with my disability—you can do anything you put your mind to. You can get through anything that life throws at you," she said. "At the end of the day, something good happened from it. It's time to re-write my story."

The Curious Case of Natalia Grace series has captivated audiences because it raises uncomfortable questions about truth, perception, and the justice system. Natalia's case has been a legal rollercoaster: age reclassification hearings, fraud allegations, adoption dissolutions, and multiple investigations. Through it all, one constant emerged—Natalia's desire to be heard on her own terms.

Beth Karas, the legal analyst who appears in the series, summed it up: "Throughout this whole saga, we tried to separate the truth from the lies. It wasn't always easy to figure out who we could trust. It's like everyone tried to turn Natalia into something she's not, instead of trying to figure out who she really is. But Natalia fought to speak her truth."

Now, with her truth laid bare, Natalia says she is content. "It's been an amazing feeling to know that my story—it inspired people," she said. She hopes that others who have been misjudged or silenced can find courage in her journey. "If I can do it, anyone can."

As for the cover shoot, it was a symbol of the new beginning she has carved out for herself. The photographs show a young woman who is poised, determined, and ready to face the world. "This is just the start," she said. "I'm not going to let the past define me anymore."

The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: The Final Chapter premiered January 6 and January 7 on Investigation Discovery and streams on Max.
