The world's richest man, Elon Musk, has once again delivered a statement that manages to spark a storm. According to him, if SpaceX meets its ambitious long-term goals, it will be worth more than all the rest of Earth combined. But behind the provocative sentence hides a much broader worldview – one in which money will no longer be the most important resource, and control over space infrastructure becomes the ultimate economic power.
Elon Musk is used to making headlines, but even for him, this is one of the most ambitious statements heard in recent years. In a post published on X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote that if SpaceX succeeds in realizing its long-term goals, 'it will be worth more than the rest of Earth.' The statement comes shortly after SpaceX was valued at over $2 trillion in its IPO, but for Musk, this is only the beginning of the road.
No longer just a space company
On the surface, SpaceX is a space launch company. In practice, Musk sees it as infrastructure upon which the economy of the future may be built. In recent years, the company has significantly expanded its operations – from launching satellites through the Starlink network to developing computing and artificial intelligence systems in space. SpaceX now operates the largest satellite constellation in history, providing internet access to remote and underserved areas across the globe. Starlink has already become a key revenue driver, with over 2 million active subscribers and contracts with airlines, maritime companies, and government agencies.
One of the most intriguing initiatives Musk discussed is Starmind – a future network of satellites that will provide immense computing power for artificial intelligence, while utilizing solar energy in space. According to initial plans, early prototypes could launch as early as 2027. As far as he is concerned, whoever controls energy, computing, and access to space will also control the economy of the future. The idea is to bypass Earth-based data centers, which consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, by placing AI compute nodes directly in orbit. These satellites would harness near-constant sunlight, drastically reducing energy costs and carbon footprints.
Will money lose meaning?
In an interview conducted around the SpaceX IPO, Musk was asked what the world would look like in an era where most work is performed by artificial intelligence and robots. 'I think money will stop being relevant at some point in the future,' he said. According to him, if AI systems and robots manage to produce almost any product and service at a negligible cost, the world could enter an era of unprecedented abundance. In such a scenario, a shortage of money will no longer be the bottleneck of the economy.
However, Musk also acknowledged that even in a world of infinite abundance, there will still be limited resources – for example energy, raw materials, manufacturing capacity, and of course access to space. In other words, future value will not be derived solely from how much money a company has, but from its control over the critical infrastructure upon which the world will rely. This is where SpaceX's advantage becomes clear: it builds rockets, launch pads, and satellites, and it already operates the most cost-effective launch system in history—the Falcon 9 and the partially reusable Starship.
Musk's vision extends beyond Earth orbit. SpaceX is developing the Starship rocket, designed to carry large payloads to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The company has contracts with NASA for lunar lander missions and is actively testing the vehicle in Texas. If Starship succeeds, it could reduce the cost of launching cargo to space by orders of magnitude, opening up the solar system for resource extraction – from asteroid mining to lunar helium-3. Such capabilities would create new markets and economic value that dwarf current Earth-based industries.
Not everyone buys the vision

His critics recall that back in 2022, he estimated that Tesla could be worth more than Apple and Saudi Aramco combined – a forecast that remains far from reality. Many projects he announced in the past – from autonomous taxis to journeys to Mars – have also progressed at a slower pace than planned. Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology is still in beta and requires constant supervision, and the company's promised robotaxi network has yet to launch. Similarly, SpaceX's timeline for Mars colonization has slipped repeatedly; Musk initially hoped to send the first crewed mission to Mars by the mid-2020s, but now it seems more likely that the mid-2030s is a realistic target. Even the Starmind satellite network, if it ever materializes, would face regulatory hurdles, technical challenges, and competition from other companies like Amazon's Project Kuiper.
Nevertheless, Musk's ability to attract talent and capital remains formidable. SpaceX has a valuation of over $200 billion in private markets, and its IPO in 2024 was one of the most anticipated in history. The company's revenue streams are diversifying, with Starlink alone generating billions annually. SpaceX also holds a near-monopoly on commercial crew and cargo flights to the International Space Station, and it has launched numerous payloads for the U.S. military and intelligence agencies. This government and commercial business provides a stable foundation while Musk pursues his more radical long-term goals.
The broader context of Musk's statement touches on a recurring theme in his public pronouncements: the belief that humanity must become a multi-planetary species to survive existential threats. By claiming that SpaceX could be worth more than Earth, Musk is essentially arguing that the value created by expanding into space will eclipse all existing terrestrial wealth.
