New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed the orders issued by the Lokpal to investigate High Court judges, asserting that it has the authority to do so. The court described these orders as concerning and issued notices to the central government and the Lokpal Registrar. The Supreme Court will conduct further hearings on this matter in March.
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and stayed the investigation orders. The Lokpal had been investigating two complaints filed against a sitting High Court judge. On January 27, the Lokpal issued orders claiming the authority to investigate High Court judges under the Lokayukta Act of 2013. Following this, the Supreme Court intervened and stayed the orders. It also directed that the name of the concerned High Court judge should not be disclosed.
The Anti-Corruption Agency issued these orders while investigating two complaints filed against a sitting High Court judge. The complaints alleged that the judge had influenced another judicial officer and an additional district judge to act in favor of a private company in a case. Reports indicated that the judge, who was practicing as a lawyer, had previously represented the private company as a client.
